STOP Doing This Behind the Ball – Use This Driver Setup Like Jon Rahm

You should never address the golf ball from behind again,at least not the way most amateur golfers do. In this video, I’ll show you a simple driver setup tweak inspired by PGA Tour star Jon Rahm that will help you hit your driver longer, straighter, and with more consistency.

The Power of Addressing Behind the Golf Ball – Jon Rahm’s Setup Explained

In a recent interview, Jon Rahm mentioned he addresses the driver roughly two club heads behind the golf ball a move that reminded him of Moe Norman’s swing. Interestingly, this is something I’ve also done in my own swing, but not to that extreme. After hearing Rahm explain it, I’m committed to trying it more and I highly recommend you try it too.

Why This Works: Hit Through the Ball, Not Just To It

Most golfers are taught to address the ball directly and swing at it—but that creates issues like hitting down on the driver, leaving the clubface open, and losing distance. What we want is to hit through the ball and maximize upward angle of attack, especially with the driver.

By addressing the ball slightly behind (think one foot or roughly two clubheads), your swing arc moves later. That means:

  • The club is traveling upward at impact (great for driver).

  • The clubface is more likely to square or even slightly close, preventing the common left-to-right slice.

  • Your brain anticipates contact later, leading to better timing and rotation.

The Simple Setup Change That Boosts Driver Performance

Let’s get into the driver setup drill:

  1. Set up with the golf ball inside your left heel—this is standard for hitting driver.

  2. Instead of setting the clubface directly behind the ball, hover it 4–6 inches behind.

  3. To do this properly, dip your right shoulder slightly back—this promotes an in-to-out swing path, helping eliminate that over-the-top move that causes slices.

  4. During the takeaway, feel your right arm and wrist extend naturally and allow the club to release properly through impact.

This subtle but powerful adjustment encourages:

  • More clubhead speed

  • Higher launch angles

  • More consistent strikes

  • Straighter ball flights

Real-Time Results

After making this adjustment, I hit one of the best drives I’ve had in a long time. It felt pure, launched high, and flew straight—exactly what we all want from our tee shots.

So next time you’re on the golf course or the driving range, try this driver setup trick. Forget what you’ve always done, and don’t worry if it feels different—it’s supposed to.

When your playing partners ask what you’re doing, tell them: “I saw this on Alex Elliott’s golf tips—and even Jon Rahm does it.”
